Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Indigenous languages are an integral part of Nigeria’s cultural heritage, but many of these languages are at risk of extinction due to the dominance of global languages like English and Hausa. In Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, efforts to preserve and promote indigenous languages have been supported by the rise of digital media, which offers new opportunities for language learning, documentation, and dissemination. Social media platforms, websites, and mobile applications are increasingly being used to promote local languages, offering a platform for speakers to connect, share stories, and create content in their native tongues. According to Olanrewaju et al. (2024), digital media can play a critical role in the preservation and promotion of indigenous languages by providing access to resources such as language tutorials, podcasts, and video content. This study investigates how digital media is being used to promote indigenous languages in Dutse, focusing on the extent of its adoption and the impact it has on language preservation.
